Caustic Soda vs Soda Ash: Comparing Industrial Alkalis

Caustic soda (sodium hydroxide) and soda ash (sodium carbonate) are two of the most fundamental alkaline raw materials in the chemical industry.

Although their similar names can cause confusion, they are distinct chemicals with different compositions, physical properties and industrial applications.

Key differences at a glance

The core difference is strength.

Caustic soda is a strong base, which completely dissociates in water to immediately release hydroxide ions. These ions drive its high alkalinity and reactivity.

Soda ash is a sodium salt of carbonic acid. When dissolved in water, it generates a milder alkalinity.

Because caustic soda is stronger, it is approximately 30% more effective by weight in neutralisation processes. It offers faster reactions with acids and is more effective at breaking down organic matter.

Where only mild pH adjustment or a less concentrated alkali is needed, soda ash may be the more practical choice.

Caustic soda properties and applications

Caustic soda is highly alkaline, dissociating in water to produce sodium ions and hydroxide ions. This makes it highly effective at breaking down fats, oils and organic matter.

Primary industrial applications include:

  • Pulp, paper and wood processing (~25% of global consumption) – Breaks down lignin to free wood fibres for papermaking, bleaching and recycling.
  • Aluminium production (~20% of global consumption) – Essential to the Bayer process (dissolving aluminium-bearing minerals out of bauxite to produce alumina).
  • Chemical manufacturing (~15% of global demand) – Serves as a reactant and pH regulator in synthesis of solvents, dyes, synthetic fibres and plastics.
  • Textiles and dye production – Strengthens cotton fibres and boosts dye uptake through mercerisation.
  • Water treatment – Used for pH correction in water treatment systems and to remove heavy metals from wastewater.
  • Soap and detergent manufacture – A core reagent for saponification, the chemical reaction which converts fats and oils into soap bases.

The chemical is typically supplied as a liquid, in various concentrations.

50% caustic soda is the highest strength available. It freezes at 12-15°C, meaning storage tanks must be insulated.

Concentrations of 32% and below freeze instead at -30°C, suiting it to facilities without heating or insulated storage.

Soda ash properties and applications

Soda ash is a moderate, stable alkali.

Its alkalinity is generated by carbonate hydrolysis, giving it a natural chemical ceiling (or pH ‘buffer’), that prevents pH from rising much past 11.5. This makes it gentler and more straightforward to handle than caustic soda.

Popular industrial applications cover:

  • Glass manufacturing (~50% of global consumption) – Lowers the melting temperature of silica sand, reducing energy required for container, flat and solar glass production.
  • Soap, detergent and cleaning products (~10-15% of global consumption) – Stabilises the pH of liquid and powder formulations and softens water by binding calcium and magnesium ions.
  • Chemical manufacturing (~10-15% of global consumption) – A sodium source and pH regulator in production of sodium silicates, phosphates and sodium bicarbonate.
  • Pulp and paper processing – In chemical recovery systems and as a buffering agent in bleaching applications.
  • Water treatment – Gentle pH correction and water softening.
  • Clean energy – Extraction and refining of lithium carbonate for EV batteries.

Soda ash is usually supplied as a dry bulk powder, which can minimise shipping costs and storage footprint.

However, this typically requires on-site dry bulk handling equipment, silo storage and a dissolution system to turn the powder into a liquid before dosing.

Deciding between caustic soda and soda ash

Neither caustic soda nor soda ash are universally superior. Your choice will depend on your specific process requirements and handling capabilities.

In applications like wastewater pH treatment, however, caustic soda and soda ash can often perform the same chemical job.
