Sodium carbonate is a strong alkali. It is used to raise pH, soften water and aid chemical reactions across a range of settings.
In food and beverage processing, sodium carbonate is used as an pH regulator and stabiliser. It can also improve texture and is listed as a food additive under E500(ii).
• Toothpaste formulation
• Laundry detergents: builder to boost cleaning performance
• Water softener: removes calcium and magnesium ions
• Heavy-duty degreasers and industrial cleaners
• Acidity regulator and stabiliser in food manufacture
• Dough texture in baked products
• Raw material in glass manufacture: reduces melting point of silica
• Pulp and paper processing: regulates acidity during bleaching and de-inking
• Feedstock for producing sodium silicates, phosphates and bicarbonate
• Intermediate in dye, soap, and glass chemical production
• Ore refining and pH control during mineral extraction
• Precious metal separation during floatation processes
• Textile dyes
• Swimming pools and aquariums to regulate pH levels
