Technical grade glycolic acid is a high-purity acid primarily used in industrial and institutional (I&I) cleaners. Highly water soluble and thermally stable, it is less corrosive than many other traditional cleaning agents.
Glycolic acid’s small molecular size allows for effective penetration of deposits, removing scale efficiently during surface cleaning.
As a readily biodegradable acid, it is suitable for eco-friendly applications. It emits minimal odour and volatile organic compounds (VOCs), making it safe for end use in enclosed and sensitive environments.

Glycolic acid is a chloride-free alternative to aggressive mineral acids like hydrochloric and phosphoric acid. It is less corrosive to sensitive equipment and metals whilst still providing effective removal of tough scale, rust and other mineral deposits.
Compared to organic options like acetic, lactic and citric acid, glycolic acid is more efficient due to its smaller molecular size and superior chelating properties.
It also forms soluble metal salts to prevent minerals redepositing, a common drawback to citric acid. Additionally, because it has negligible odour and volatility, it is safer for use in enclosed spaces than alternatives like acetic acid.
Yes. Glycolic acid is non-volatile and does not contribute to VOC emissions. This can simplify compliance with UK and EU Solvent Emissions Regulations and can remove the need for vapour extraction systems.
No. Because of its high solubility and low molecular weight, glycolic acid rinses away quickly and does not leave a film. Its chelating properties also prevent minerals from depositing, making it suitable for ‘clean-in-place’ (CIP) applications.
