Amphoteric surfactants, which have zero net charge, are commonly used in household and industrial cleaners and personal care products. They help to reduce the surface tension across a wide pH range, enhancing formulation effectiveness.
Also known as zwitterionic surfactants, popular applications for this type of surfactant include cleaners (liquid cleaning products, detergents and industrial cleaners) and personal care products (shampoos, cleansers and cosmetics).
Solution pH will determine how the surfactant reacts – in acidic solutions, the surfactant will develop a positive charge, behaving like a cationic surfactant. In alkaline solutions, it will develop a negative charge and behave like an anionic surfactant.
