Dihydroxyacetone (DHA) is widely recognised as the most effective sunless tanning additive and serves as the main active ingredient in all self-tanning skincare products. These products may be classified as ‘topical sunless tanners’ or ‘temporary bronzers’.
DHA can be derived from sugar beets and sugar cane. Pigments called melanoidins are created when it is applied to the skin – these are similar in colour to melanin, the natural substances in skin that ‘tan’ in the presence of UV rays.
It can be used on its own or blended with other tanning components to achieve the desired effect. Approved for cosmetic use by the FDA in the USA, the Canadian Health Ministry and most EU member states, DHA is a trusted choice in the sunless tanning industry.
