With an intense, sweet taste, stevia is extracted from a natural source — the leaves of the South American Stevia rebaudiana plant. Its active ingredient, steviol glycosides, make it around 200 times sweeter than glucose and sucrose (table sugar).
Stevia is non-nutritive — it contains no calories, carbohydrates or artificial ingredients. As food manufacturers seek to reduce sugar content, it is popular for sweetening diet beverages, cereals, confectionery, baked goods, dairy products and other health foods.
