What Is Caustic Soda & What Is It Used for in Industry?

Also known as sodium hydroxide and lye, caustic soda is a highly corrosive, alkaline compound and a central substance in the chemical industry.

Use of caustic soda has been dated back as far as 2800 BC, with archaeological excavations finding evidence for use of lye-based soaps by Babylonian and ancient Egyptians.

Today, it is one of the most widely used industrial chemicals, with global production exceeding 90 million tonnes (and expected to grow at 4.7% annually until 2033). This reflects its widespread importance across many industrial processes.

Modern production started in the 19th century, following the development of the chlor-alkali process, which remains the primary manufacturing method today.

It involves the electrolysis of saltwater (brine). The resulting sodium hydroxide is initially produced as a solution, before being concentrated into various grades and formats, including liquid caustic soda, flakes and pearls.

Its ability to raise pH, neutralise acids and break down organic materials makes it essential for chemical manufacture, pulp and paper production, metal processing, detergents, water treatment and textiles.

Chemical manufacturing

Caustic soda serves as both a feedstock and processing aid across many manufacturing sectors, with these uses accounting for an estimated 15–20% of global caustic soda demand.

With strong alkalinity, it can neutralise acids and drive chemical reactions, creating the conditions needed to produce many industrial chemicals.

These include solvents, dyes, synthetic fibres and plastics. It also acts as a reactant in numerous intermediate production processes.

Pulp, paper and wood processing

This is one of the largest sectors for caustic soda consumption, with some market studies estimating pulp and paper to account for around 30-35% of global caustic soda consumption.

The chemical helps to break down lignin (the natural substance binding wood fibres) during pulping. This allows the material to be processed into paper products.

Because it can dissolve organic compounds and maintain alkaline process conditions, caustic soda also plays a role in bleaching, paper recycling and removal of impurities from wood materials.

Aluminium production

Caustic soda is central to the Bayer process, which is the primary method of refining bauxite ore in alumina, the primary raw material used to produce aluminum metal.

The compound dissolves the aluminium-bearing minerals, leaving impurities behind, allowing for efficient extraction of the raw material that produce aluminium metal.

Without caustic soda, the process of refining aluminium would be far more costly and inefficient. This makes caustic soda incredibly strategically important.

Increasing demand for aluminium across automotive and aerospace is driving this market – like pulp and paper, some estimates suggest alumina refining accounts for around 30% of global caustic soda consumption.

Water treatment

As an alkaline substance, caustic soda is used at water treatment facilities for controlling pH – maintaining the correct alkalinity is important for protecting infrastructure, supporting treatment chemistry and ensuring compliance with environmental regulations.

The compound can also be used for removing heavy metals from industrial wastewater. It converts dissolved matter into insoluble compounds that can be separated and removed before the wastewater is discharged.

Textiles and dye production

Caustic soda is used for mercerisation, a chemical finishing treatment which strengthens cotton fibres, boosts dye uptake and improves the appearance of finished fabrics.

Natural oils, waxes and impurities can also be removed from fibres using caustic soda, and the compound also serves as an important raw material in the production of dyes and colourants.

Soap and detergent manufacture

The first historic use and still a major application in global consumption of caustic soda, the compound reacts with fats and oils to produce soap and contribute to the manufacture of cleaning products, bleaches and drain cleaners.

Beyond these six major industrial sectors, as a food-grade material caustic soda is used for cacao processing, caramel colouring and vegetable peeling.

It also has application as a cleaning agent in dairy and food processing facilities, and plays a supporting role in pharmaceutical manufacturing, particularly the production of aspirin.
