As a solid, it is white in colour with a pungent sulphur dioxide odour. In solution form, it is a yellowish colour with a pungent sulphur dioxide odour.
• Used in various detergents acting as a sanitisation and cleaning agent.
• Used to sanitise wine and beer making equipment.
• An excipient in some tablets such as paracetamol.
• Preservative and antioxidant with wide-ranging uses.
